Gomag, Shopify or WooCommerce, for a Romanian store
The difference isn't the headline price — it's what localisation costs you. Gomag is built for Romania and includes couriers, processors and e-invoicing natively, but charges by orders: every block of 350 orders above your plan costs another €67 a month. Shopify has the best ecosystem, but on the Basic plan it takes an extra 2% on top of any processor that isn't Shopify Payments — meaning Netopia, PayU or EuPlătesc. WooCommerce is cheapest at volume and the only one you fully control, at the cost of owning the maintenance.
What they cost, with official figures
Gomag: Basic €7/month (200 products), Advanced €37 (2,000), Elite €97 (10,000). The price covers an average of 350 orders a month, and every additional 350-order block costs another €67/month. A shop with 1,400 orders on Advanced pays €238, not €37. No sales commission. Source: gomag.ro/preturi, September 2026.
Shopify: Basic $39/month, Grow $105, Advanced $399. Card processing through Shopify Payments is 2.9% + 30¢ on Basic. But the fee that matters in Romania is the third-party gateway fee: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced. Source: shopify.com/pricing, in USD; check local billing.
WooCommerce: the licence is free. Hosting starts at a few tens of RON a month, a .ro domain is around 54 RON a year, and a mid-size shop realistically lands at 2,000–4,000 RON a year in direct costs. The rest is development time — the line comparisons leave out.
Shopify's Romanian trap
Shopify Payments doesn't cover the local payment methods you need, so you end up on Netopia, PayU or EuPlătesc. And Shopify charges you 2% on top, on Basic, precisely because you're using another processor.
Put together: 2% Shopify plus the processor's own fee, roughly 1.0–1.8% for EU-issued cards. Effective payment cost lands around 3–3.8% on every order. It's the strongest argument against Shopify for a Romanian shop, and almost no comparison puts it up front.
It's solved by moving up to Grow or Advanced, where the fee drops to 1% and 0.6% — but then you're comparing $105 or $399 a month with €37 on Gomag.
Who handles Romania natively
Couriers — FAN, Sameday, Cargus, GLS, DPD: Gomag includes them. WooCommerce has free official plugins from FAN and Cargus. Shopify needs paid third-party apps.
Payments — Netopia, PayU, EuPlătesc: native in Gomag. WooCommerce has an official Netopia plugin and widely used integrations for the rest. Shopify, through apps, plus the 2%.
e-Factura and the tax portal: Gomag includes SmartBill. WooCommerce works through SmartBill or Oblio on small subscriptions. Shopify needs an intermediary.
eMAG Marketplace: Gomag has native integration from the Advanced plan. The others go through a plugin or an ERP.
How we choose
Gomag if you want to be selling this month, do under 350 orders a month and need nothing unusual. The built-in localisation saves you weeks.
WooCommerce if you have over a thousand products, want your own integrations with an ERP or with suppliers, or want not to depend on anyone else's pricing decisions. It's the platform we work on, and not by accident: at volume, control over data and integrations is what makes the difference.
Shopify if you also sell outside Romania, need its app and theme ecosystem, and accept the higher per-order cost on the local market.
What we don't recommend: choosing by the price on the front page. At 1,400 orders a month, the “€7” Gomag costs €238, and the “$39” Shopify costs $39 plus 2% of your entire turnover.
In short
Gomag wins on time to launch, WooCommerce on cost at volume and on control, Shopify on ecosystem. In Romania the 2% third-party gateway fee is what most often moves the decision — and it's the last line people look at.
